I recently attended a street photography workshop in London with Matt, and it was a truly eye-opening experience. He helped us see familiar places from completely new perspectives, encouraging us to look at everyday streets and corners with fresh eyes. Small shifts in angle and a deeper attention to light transformed ordinary scenes into compelling images.

Matt is an excellent teacher—clear, supportive, and very hands-on. He shared practical tips and real shooting techniques throughout, focusing on creative vision rather than fancy gear. We learned how to work creatively with available light, use shadows and reflections effectively, and incorporate textures and leading lines to strengthen composition.

It was an inspiring and highly practical workshop, and I definitely plan to do it again.

If you (as I and many, many street photographers do) admire the work of the mighty Saul Leiter then a one-to-one workshop or a group workshop with Matt Hall is something you should very seriously consider. I’m not suggesting for a (13th) second that Matt copies Leiter’s style, rather If you are familiar with Matt’s work, you will know his work shares some familiar elements with the great man. Matt’s use of colour, textures, reflections, subtle defocus and use of shallow depth of field, sub framing, and complex layering all come together to produce some of the most sublime and abstract images being produced by any street photographer on the scene today. Matt’s vision and ability to see and think outside of the box to construct amazing images from seemingly nothing is uncanny and he teaches us these skills in a very calm, relaxed and professional manner. Nothing is held back as Matt shares his knowledge and techniques and this openness is very much appreciated. Techniques where, for example, a scene is identified and surfaces (which you would not believe can be used) are used as reflections and further elements introduced to take the image to another level by masking or layering or added as frames. It is precisely this kind of skill which made me want to book a one-to-one workshop and as you can probably tell by this review, I was absolutely delighted with the day. I look forward to getting out there putting the knowledge I’ve received into practice. I cannot recommend Matt’s workshops highly enough.
